Early Signs of Autism Disorder

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a Neuro-Developmental Disorder. The term Autism originated from a Greek word Autos means “self”. Children suffering from Autism Disorder are generally interested in self.

Early identification of Autism Disorder:

Speech and Language Delays

  • By 16 months, the child cannot speak even a single word (e.g., "Mom," "Dada").
  • By 2 years, the child is unable to combine two words (e.g., "Want water," "No play").

Communication Difficulties

  • The child struggles to make eye contact and engage in conversations.
  • Their facial expressions, movements, and gestures rarely match what they are saying, making their body language difficult to understand.

Limited Social Interaction

  • They rarely smile.
  • They exhibit extremely poor social interaction.
  • While other children play and interact with friends, these children often play alone and seem to prefer being in their own world.

Challenges with Following Instructions

  • They do not respond to simple instructions like "Sit on the chair" or "Drink water."
  • It can be difficult to understand what children with ASD want to communicate.

Repetitive Behaviors

  • Some children with ASD engage in repetitive actions, such as flapping their arms or walking on their toes.
  • They may suddenly freeze in place.
  • Repetitive behaviors can also manifest as persistent, intense preoccupations with specific topics, such as numbers or symbols.

Need for Consistency

  • Children with ASD often require absolute consistency in their environment.
  • Even slight changes can cause them significant distress, leading to maladaptive behavior such as anger or throwing toys
