Early Signs of Neurodevelopmental Concerns and Intervention Outcomes

A male child was brought to The Inference at around 2 years of age with the following concerns reported by caregivers:
• Hand flapping
• Limited eye contact
• Restlessness & hyperactivity
• Making repetitive sounds
• No response to name calling

Notably, screen exposure began at 6–7 months and continued for approximately 1.5 years, impacting early social and communication engagement.

The child also presented with:
• Difficulty in sitting and focusing
• Throwing behavior
• Fixation on holding the same object
• Low tolerance to failure / frustration

 Intervention Plan (Structured & Consistent):
✔️ Behavior Therapy – 2 days/week (attention, sitting tolerance, task engagement)
✔️ Special Education – 1 day/week (hand-eye coordination, task-based learning)
✔️ Occupational Therapy – regular sessions (sensory regulation)
✔️ Music Therapy – improving attention, rhythm, and emotional regulation
✔️ Parental Psychoeducation – creating a structured, empathetic home environment

Intervention focused on:
• Sitting and attending to structured tasks
• Receptive communication through picture identification
• Functional skills like holding, grasping, giving
• Emotional regulation through rhythmic and interactive activities

Comparative Progress (Pre vs Post Intervention):

Before Intervention:
• No eye contact / poor social engagement
• No response to name
• High restlessness and poor sitting tolerance
• Frequent throwing & rigidity in behavior
• Fixation on objects
• Difficulty accepting failure
• Limited receptive communication

After Consistent Intervention:
• Improved eye contact & social connection
• Responds to name calling
• Increased attention span & sitting ability
• Reduction in throwing behavior
• Better flexibility in tasks & reduced fixation
• Improved tolerance to failure
• Developed receptive communication (picture identification, giving, grasping)
• Enhanced emotional regulation and engagement through music-based activities

Key Insight:
A combination of structured therapy, sensory regulation, music-based engagement, skill-based learning, and parental involvement within a homely clinical environment can significantly transform developmental outcomes.

Early support doesn’t just reduce symptoms — it builds abilities.
